Turning Waste into Value at Smiley Monroe
At Smiley Monroe, we believe waste is simply potential in the wrong place. That’s why, as part of our commitment to the circular economy, we organised Pallets to Planters—a sustainability initiative focused on transforming timber offcuts from old exhibition stands into purpose-driven, upcycled garden planters.
Held just one week after our World Environment Day tree planting, this hands-on event marked another milestone in our Giant Leap strategy to drive positive impact for people and planet by 2030.
The activity took place at our Giants of Belting HQ, where our Green Giants team of sustainability champions led colleagues in assembling flat-pack planter kits using wood from decommissioned outdoor exhibition stands. Instead of being discarded, this material has been given new life, creative, useful, and rooted in environmental purpose.
Grow plants that thrive, regardless of local soilContainer gardening lets you control soil quality, pH, and drainage. Whether you’re planting Rhododendrons, herbs, or Camellias, planters open up new possibilities—even in spaces where native soil wouldn’t support them.
Refresh your layout on demandUpcycled planters are fully movable. That means flexible garden design, seasonal re-styling, or spontaneous updates—no digging required.
Make gardening more accessibleElevated planters reduce bending and kneeling, helping more people—regardless of age or mobility—enjoy the proven mental health benefits of getting their hands in the soil.
Ideal for small or low-maintenance spacesSmaller footprint? No problem. Planters simplify feeding and watering, reduce weed pressure, and make urban or paved areas instantly grow-ready.
Support biodiversity while growing your ownUpcycled planters are perfect for cultivating herbs, leafy greens, or berries at home. Many of these plants also serve as pollinator magnets, helping to support local bees and butterflies.
Our team came together to build and plant the upcycled planters with pollinator-friendly greenery and herbs. The initiative demonstrates how circular thinking can lead to simple, beautiful solutions that support both community and climate.
